The Frances J. Bright Woman’s Club hosted its 57th annual Debutante Cotillion at the Woodfield Country Club in Boca Raton. The event, held April 26, featured a Great Gatsby-inspired 1920s theme and recognized 12th-grade debutantes, according to a recent announcement.
Mentorship program highlighted community service and career exploration
The debutantes participated in a mentorship program that included community service projects, art activities and career exploration. As part of the program, students took the Taste History Art & Culture Study Tour via Brightline Trains to Miami’s Overtown and Design Districts.
During the black-tie ball, State Attorney Alexcia Cox addressed the attendees as the guest speaker, offering words of encouragement to the students. Florida Power & Light Co. served as a gold sponsor for the event.

Frances J. Bright Woman’s Club has a long history of community service
The Frances J. Bright Woman’s Club Charitable Foundation is a volunteer-based nonprofit headquartered in Delray Beach. It was named in honor of Frances J. Bright, a Black educator who began teaching in Palm Beach County in 1900. Bright was the first Black woman to teach in Delray Beach, instructing students at the historically segregated School No. 4.

In addition to the debutante program, the club raises funds to award scholarships to high school seniors. The organization is one of the oldest historically Black civic groups in continuous operation in Palm Beach County.
In February, Palm Beach County Commissioner Bobby Powell presented the club with a proclamation recognizing its contributions to the community.
