More than 100 establishments have chosen to extend their business hours as Boston hosts World Cup watch parties, celebrations for the 250th anniversary of the U.S. and an assortment of summertime events.
On June 8, Gov. Maura Healey signed an act authorizing Massachusetts municipalities to opt in to a temporary pilot to extend the hours of liquor licenses. The temporary change to state liquor laws allows towns and cities to extend service by one hour at bars, restaurants and other businesses offering alcohol on-site. The latest they can stay open is 3 a.m.
The act also allows communities to designate outdoor areas, including streets and public parks, where residents and visitors may consume alcohol purchased from licensed establishments within the zones. The law lasts through July 31.
Businesses that currently hold licenses to serve alcohol until 2 a.m. can apply through the City of Boston Licensing Board to extend alcohol or entertainment hours until 3 a.m. Those with earlier closing times can submit a different application to extend operating hours by an additional hour. No fees are required for either the application or to extend the hours.
As of Thursday, June 11, 144 establishments have received an extension approval from the City of Boston Licensing Board. The Board continues to approve establishments on a rolling basis.
