Teen dies in utility vehicle crash in Tuscarawas County
GNADENHUTTEN − A 14-year-old was killed June 30 in an off-roading vehicle accident while another 14-year-old was hospitalized, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.
The pair were riding a 2013 Polaris Ranger side-by-side UTV north around 1:05 p.m. on Township Road 203, also known as Longbranch Road SE, in Clay Township.
The Patrol did not say which of the teens was driving the vehicle. But neither were wearing seat belts or helmets.
According to investigators, the driver failed to handle a left turn in the roadway, going off the right side of the road. The vehicle overturned and both of the teens were thrown.
One died at the scene. A helicopter flew the other teen to Akron Children’s Hospital in Akron.
The Patrol’s new release did not identify the teens, provide their gender and say which community they lived in.
Besides the Patrol, among those responding were the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s office, Arrowhead Joint Fire District, Uhrichsville Fire/EMS and the Tuscarawas County Coroner’s office. Troopers are still investigating to determine what caused the crash.
