UK authorities signaled a possible block on X (formerly Twitter) as Ofcom began an investigation into AI-generated sexualized images, underscoring online safety enforcement. Elon Musk’s platform faces scrutiny over Grok, the AI chatbot, and a potential UK ban on X under the Online Safety Act 2023. The Telegraph reported on January 8 that officials are considering options amid concerns about non-consensual images of women and children. On January 7, Prime Minister Keir Starmer asked Ofcom to keep all options open, calling the material “not to be tolerated.” Ofcom said it made urgent contact with X. Any ban would follow a legal process, including investigation, a provisional ruling, and, if noncompliance persists, a possible court order to block the website and app in the UK.
