New details emerge in Sarasota killings case as charge added

Nicholas Novickis, a Sarasota man accused of killing his girlfriend and 6-year-old son on May 23, is facing a new charge.

And in addition to the latest charge, court records have provided new details in the case, including numerous firearms found inside his downtown Sarasota apartment and at the crime scene, and prescription methadone discovered in his vehicle.

The latest charge filed against Novickis, 34, is criminal mischief/property damage, records show. Novickis is already facing two felony counts of second-degree murder and a charge of cruelty to animals. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is now being represented by prominent Sarasota defense attorney Derek Byrd.

What is Nicholas Novickis accused of?

On May 23, at around 11:38 a.m., Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a home in the 4700 block of Mondrian Court in Sarasota’s Artistry neighborhood after Donna Novickis called 911 and reported that her son, Nicholas Novickis, shot his girlfriend, Allie Novickis, 34, son Phoenix Novickis, 6, and their dog.

A gunshot could be heard in the background of the 911 call, according to the latest court records.

Allie and Phoenix Novickis were both killed by shotgun blasts and were pronounced dead at the scene. The dog was taken to a veterinary clinic, where it later died.

Nicholas Novickis was arrested at the scene and charged with the deaths. The motive remains unclear.

During a sworn police interview, Donna Novickis said that Nicholas, Allie, and Phoenix Novickis came to her house to swim.

Donna Novickis later provided surveillance video that showed Nicholas Novickis walking out onto the lanai while holding a shotgun. The shooting of Phoenix Novickis was captured on video; the shooting of Allie Novickis was not.

What is the latest in the case?

According to a risk protection order filed against Novickis by the sheriff’s office, Allie Novickis was found on the lanai and died from multiple gunshot wounds. Phoenix Novickis died from a single gunshot wound to the head.

Donna Novickis told deputies that she believed Nicholas was taking antidepressants but could not provide further information.

Using a search warrant, detectives found methadone in a pink liquid form in his vehicle. The medication was prescribed, records show.

Detectives also searched the downtown Sarasota apartment where Novickis lived and found a plastic container with a handwritten label that said “methadone.” Inside the container were large pills that were not immediately identified, documents show.

According to court documents, detectives searched both the crime scene and Novickis’ downtown apartment and collected “numerous firearms and ammunition.”

Court records show Nicholas Novickis lived in downtown Sarasota with Allie and Phoenix.

Nicholas Novickis, records show, previously lived in West Chicago as recently as 2024.

The Artistry neighborhood, meanwhile, is located at the eastern end of Palmer Boulevard near Lorraine Road, east of Interstate 75 in Sarasota County.

Were Nicholas Novickis and Allie Novickis married?

Despite sharing the same last name, the sheriff’s office said that because a marriage license has not been located, Allie Novickis is being referred to as Nicholas Novickis’ girlfriend.

However, all court records pertaining to Nicholas Novickis classify him as being married, including on the most recent charge of criminal mischief.

The latest document also lists his occupation as being “retired.”

Does Nicholas Novickis have a criminal history?

In 2014, court records show Novickis was arrested for possession of paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance and driving with a suspended license. In 2017, he was arrested for DUI. The four offenses took place in Illinois.

In 2025, Novickis was ticketed in Sarasota for driving 31 mph in a 20-mph school zone.
