NEW HAVEN – A West Haven man will serve more than a half-century in prison after being found guilty of bludgeoning his wife to death at a Guilford condominium complex, officials say.
Robert Faison, 49, was sentenced to 55 years in prison in state Superior Court in New Haven Wednesday for the 2021 murder of Lindsey Hopkins, the Connecticut Division of Criminal Justice said in a news release.
A three-judge panel convicted Faison of murder on June 26, officials said, adding Faison elected to be tried before a panel consisting of Judge Tracy Lee Dayton, Judge Eugene R. Calistro Jr. and Judge Patrick F. Caruso.
According to an arrest warrant, Guilford police found Hopkins lying on the floor in a condominium suffering from head and body wounds after officers responded to a well-being check. Investigators later found a claw hammer, a screwdriver and an ax that likely had DNA from Faison and Hopkins.
The state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined Hopkins died of a homicide caused by blunt force trauma to the head and neck, according to the affidavit.
Evidence, presented over a four-day period, showed Faison murdered Hopkins on or about July 22, 2021.
Police wrote in the warrant that Faison made no attempts to contact law enforcement, friends or family to check on Hopkins, and did not respond to calls and voicemail messages. Officials previously said Faison was found in a shelter in New York City on July 30 and arrested for violation of probation. He was extradited to Connecticut in August 2021 and charged in October 2021.
Hopkins’ daughter spoke at Wednesday’s sentencing hearing, saying Faison shows “no remorse and no regret” for the murder.
“I have a child now,” Hopkins’ daughter said. “My child will never get to know his grandmother, nor will my mother get to know her grandchild. I want to thank all the authorities who dedicated themselves to obtaining justice for my mother.”
