Deputies ran a contraband search in the maximum security wing of the Cobb County Jail, and Channel 2 Action News got an exclusive look as it happened.
Channel 2 Cobb County Bureau Chief Michele Newell was at the jail on Friday as deputies searched and found a makeshift knife, homemade tattoo gun and more.
Inmates in the corner of the Cobb County Jail that was searched are charged with murder, rape and other serious crimes.

“You can see where it’s been sharpened. They used the concrete,” Lt. Adam Clemmer said while showing a shank. “They may add paper, part of a book or metal that they might find as a handle, and that will be the beginning of a shank.”
He says they conduct shakedowns frequently, so they did not find much on Friday.
Clemmer says it’s rare that they find weapons, but when they do, inmates are using them to defend themselves.

He also showed Newell a piece of cellophane wrapper from a sandwich.
“They’ll wrap them. They’ll just sit there and they’ll make these as hard as they can … and that in a sock is enough to knock someone a little bit loopy,” Clemmer said.
He says the majority of what they found was excess laundry that inmates store up and hide in their cells, which is considered contraband, but isn’t dangerous.
