New Bedford’s worth, Mattapoisett shooting: Standard Times top stories

As we kickstart a new week, let’s take a quick look at the top headlines from last week.

We talked to Darlene Spencer, board president of the Cape Verdean Association in New Bedford, who traveled to Houston on June 26 to attend Cape Verde’s World Cup match against Saudi Arabia. The history-making match ended in a 0-0 draw and sent the island nation into the knockout round in its first appearance on soccer’s biggest stage. Spencer said she felt pride not only from the result on the field, but from what the team represents, with many of Cape Verde’s players having roots in the islands but were born or raised elsewhere, including in Portugal, the Netherlands and the United States.

Since launching 18 months ago, on some weeks, Dough & Basil sells around 300 pizzas across just three days. Last week, at Buzzards Bay Brewery, the truck sold 140 pizzas in two hours. Now it’s become the need-to-try pizza of the summer. The business operates on a preorder system, with menus posted on Instagram that sell out within an hour. Owner Andrew Salpietro makes everything from scratch, including the dough and sauce, using quality ingredients.

Real estate agent, broker and homeowner Gary Gagne Jr. proposes to redevelop 308 Purchase St. at right into a 10-unit apartment development.

Local developer Gary Gagne Jr. wants to move forward with plans for a 10-unit housing project but lack of parking has Planning Board members concerned.

The vacant two-story at 308 Purchase St. is an irregularly shaped parcel that takes up a majority of the lot, leaving little room for on-site parking. Gagne plans to convert the building into 2 one-bedroom and 3 two-bedroom apartments on both the first and second floors. The building is located near the Alfred J. Gomes School.

Summer means one thing — beach days. Long days in the sun, lying in the sand, and spending hours in the waves.

While it may be tempting to fall asleep on the beach after a long day in the sun, sleeping overnight at most public beaches in Massachusetts is not allowed.

While there technically is not one statewide law that specifically says “sleeping on the beach is illegal,” most public beaches prohibit overnight sleeping or camping through state regulations and local bylaws.
