Tropical Storm Edouard makes landfall in southwest Louisiana

Tropical Storm Edouard made landfall Tuesday afternoon along the Gulf Coast near Johnson Bayou, La., with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.

A tropical storm warning remains in effect for parts of the northwestern Gulf Coast as Edouard moves inland.

A hurricane watch for a portion of the Gulf Coast from High Island, Texas, to Cameron, La., has been discontinued. A storm surge warning for a portion of the northwestern Gulf Coast has also been discontinued.

Meanwhile, several storms continue to brew in the Pacific during an El Niño that’s expected to become one of the strongest on record. According to the latest advisories, Tropical Storm Lowell has intensified into a Category 1 hurricane, while Hurricane Karina and Tropical Storm Marie continue to churn in the Pacific.

Swells from Lowell are forecast to reach the Hawaiian Islands later this week. Marie, meanwhile, is expected to strengthen into a hurricane by midweek.

Where exactly is Tropical Storm Edouard, and what is its path?

According to the hurricane center’s latest advisory, as of 5 p.m. ET on Tuesday:

  • Tropical Storm Edouard was located about 5 miles west of Port Arthur, Texas, and about 40 miles west of Cameron, La.

  • It had maximum sustained winds of 50 mph.

  • It was moving northwest at 7 mph.

“On the forecast track, the center of Edouard will continue moving inland over eastern Texas through Wednesday,” the NHC said.

Watches and warnings in effect

A tropical storm warning is in effect for:

  • Port Bolivar, Texas, to the Vermilion/Iberia Parish Line in Louisiana

Tropical storm conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area.

The biggest threats now

Tropical storm conditions are ongoing in the warning area along the northwestern Gulf Coast.

The combination of storm surge and the tide is expected to flood typically dry areas near the coast as rising waters move inland, according to the NHC. Between 1 and 3 feet of storm surge is expected from High Island, Texas, to the Vermilion/Cameron Parish Line in Louisiana.

Heavy rain from Edouard is likely to cause flash flooding, especially in low-lying and urban areas. The storm could produce rainfall totals of 3 to 7 inches, with a maximum of 12 inches in some areas, for parts of the upper Texas coast inland through east-central Texas, the NHC said. In far southwest Louisiana, 2 to 4 inches of rain is possible.

“A tornado or two is possible through this evening across parts of southwest Louisiana and southeast Texas,” NHC forecasters said Tuesday.

Hurricane Lowell is forecast to strengthen into a major hurricane on Wednesday. It’s located about 535 miles southeast of Hilo, Hawaii, and is moving west-northwest with maximum sustained winds of 90 mph. There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect. Swells generated by the storm are forecast to affect portions of the Hawaiian Islands beginning Wednesday.

Hurricane Karina, a Category 4 storm, is moving west about 1,330 miles west of the southern tip of Baja California, with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph. There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect, and it’s expected to gradually weaken over the next several days.

Tropical Storm Marie is strengthening and is forecast to become a hurricane on Wednesday. It’s about 510 miles south of the southern tip of Baja California, according to the NHC. The system has maximum sustained winds of 60 mph and is moving northwest at about 8 mph. There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect. Storm swells will affect parts of the southwest coast of Mexico and the Baja California peninsula over the next few days, causing life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
