Uncertainty over future of Northwest Mall as Texas High-Speed Rail could be in development

The Northwest Mall has been sitting empty for years, and now there’s movement of some kind out there.

Near Hempstead Road and North Post Oak Road, there’s been chatter that something has been going on at the Northwest Mall that’s been sitting empty for nearly ten years.

SkyEye was over the site of the former mall on Thursday, capturing images of crews working on the demolition of the building.

Through the years, people have confirmed to ABC13 that the abandoned Northwest Mall could become a train station for a high-speed rail from Houston to Dallas.

REALTED: $64M grant pushes Houston to Dallas high-speed rail closer to reality, but still far from completion

On Friday, Eyewitness News tried to get answers from anyone tied to the Northwest Mall or what could take the abandoned building’s place.

The ABC13 team made calls and sent emails to developers, partners, and organizations tied to the once-proposed Texas High Speed Rail, since records show they’re the owners of the former mall’s site.

There have been reports that the recent work happening here at this site could become a train station.

It has Waller County Judge Trey Duhon, who is also the president of Texas Against High Speed Rail, very frustrated

“Putting out this information that, for lack of better words, is propaganda…that they are close to starting construction or beginning construction, and this is the first step, ” Duhon said. “We’ve been fighting this for ten years now, and they continue putting out this garbage for lack of better words. It’s a lie. If they’re telling people that this project is moving forward, they’re lying to people and lying to their faces.”

It seems no one wants to talk about what’s going on here at the Northwest Mall. It’s unclear why there’s so much secrecy.

Eyewitness News even called someone with the Kleinheinz Capital group, the owners of the Texas High Speed Rail Project, but they told ABC13 they wouldn’t comment.
