SANFORD, Maine — Authorities are asking residents to avoid certain areas of Springvale as they search for a man who fired a gun at a police officer during the early hours of Aug. 25.
According to the Sanford Police Department, police are looking for the suspect in the areas of Blanchard Road, Hanson Ridge, Oak Street, Lebanon Street, Sunset Road and Smith Road in the Springvale village.
“Residents in these areas should remain alert and aware of their surroundings,” the police department stated in a social media post. “If you see anyone suspicious, do not approach, confront, or engage them.”
The search began shortly after an officer attempted to pull over a vehicle near Shaw and Lebanon streets in downtown Sanford at 1:11 a.m., according to police.
“During the attempted stop, an occupant of the vehicle fired a gun at the officer and the police cruiser,” police stated.
The motorist continued to flee and later abandoned the vehicle.
No officers were injured, police said.
Sanford police are investigating an alleged assault involving a man and several juveniles at Number One Pond on June 25.
The department acknowledged the “level of police activity” in the area could be “unsettling. We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation as our officers work to locate those responsible and keep the community safe.”
The incident is the second one to involve gunfire in the greater Sanford area in just a few days. In a separate matter during this past weekend, shots were fired from a black sedan at another vehicle traveling on Route 202 in Lebanon. One bullet hit the side of the car, and another blew out a tire.
In that incident, a 19-year-old man and a 14-year-old girl, both from Sanford, have been arrested and are facing charges.
