BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Four dogs were rescued, and three firefighters suffered heat exhaustion when the East Side Fire Department tackled an apartment fire at 16441 South Harrells Ferry Road.
According to ESFD, “crews found an active fire in the attic of a 16-plex apartment building, with dogs trapped inside one of the units.”
After forcing their way in, firefighters were able to rescue the dogs and keep the fire from spreading to more than one apartment.

Three firefighters received treatment at the scene, ESFD said. One Baton Rouge firefighter and two East Side Fire Department firefighters were subsequently taken to a hospital.
Fire investigators initially determined that the apartment fire was started by a lightning strike.
The St. George Fire Department also provided assistance with putting the fire out and the rescue.
