SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — These days, you can find all kinds of products designed to keep your pets safe. But that idea isn’t exactly new. In this morning’s Flashback Friday, KELOLAND’s Perry Groten takes us back to 1985, where one woman was using a unique method to keep her dogs safe behind the wheel.
When it’s time to go for a drive, it’s always safety first for Nancy Smith, even when it comes to her canine traveling companions, Smith has invented a seat belt for dogs an adjustable nylon and Velcro harness that attaches to the seat belt humans use.
“The dogs loose in the car it’s distracting, it’s worrisome, and it’s a hazard, you know, it’s a hazard for the pet, it’s a hazard for the family, you know, all those little things when you jolt and stop it helps you keep, that dog balanced and away from you.”
Smith teaches physical education at Worthington Community College and runs a dog kennel at her rural Brewster home.
She has several dogs of her own who seem to be quite comfortable joyriding in a seat belt.
“Oh mine like it, you just slip it on, well they know we’re going for a ride in the car, you know.”
Smith is seeking a patent on her invention and plans to market it nationwide.
She’s hoping dog owners will find it an ideal gift for their pet, in addition to giving them a new leash on life.
