Man charged in East Palo Alto’s first killing in more than two years

Prosecutors charged a 53-year-old man with involuntary manslaughter Tuesday in connection with the first reported killing in East Palo Alto in more than two years.

A Menlo Park resident, identified as 52-year-old Andres Alberto Henriquez Gomez, died Sept. 3 after he was attacked by a man “acting erratically and disrobing in public,” the East Palo Alto Police Department said.

Police said Henriquez Gomez, who suffered “significant” facial injuries in the attack, identified the suspect before he was transported to Stanford Hospital, where he died later the same day.

The San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office charged East Palo Alto resident Angel Lopez Ibarra Jr. with involuntary manslaughter as well as assault with a deadly weapon and causing great bodily injury, police said Tuesday. The 53-year-old was booked into Maguire Correctional Facility in Redwood City, county records show.

Authorities have not said what led up to the attack.

The death marked the Peninsula city’s first killing since April 2024, according to the police department. Nicknamed the “murder capital” of the country in the early 1990s, East Palo Alto’s homicide rate gradually dropped to zero in 2023.

The investigation remains active and ongoing, police said Thursday.
