Son fatally shot Wyandotte mother before taking own life, police say
Police on Tuesday released further details about a Wyandotte woman’s fatal weekend shooting.
They also said the suspect in her murder took his own life.
Wyandotte police said dispatchers received a call at about 6:20 p.m. Saturday from a woman reporting a domestic dispute with her son at a home in the 800 block of Sixth Street near Goddard Road and Biddle Avenue.
Officers went to the home, knocked on the door, but no one answered, and the house was quiet, according to authorities. They tried to look into the home through its windows, but the shades were pulled down, and they could not see inside. Because the officers had no legal grounds to enter by force, dispatchers tried to reach the caller by phone but were unsuccessful.
At about 3:15 a.m. on Sunday, dispatchers received a call that prompted officers to return to the same home and go inside. Police said they entered and found a deceased 67-year-old woman with multiple gunshot wounds.
Detectives began investigating and believed their primary suspect was the victim’s 41-year-old son, they said.
Police determined the victim’s vehicle was missing from the home’s driveway, investigators said.
After reviewing footage recorded by the department’s Flock license plate reader system, officers spotted the vehicle traveling west on Goddard Road away from the home minutes after dispatchers received the initial 911 call, they said.
“Based on the information we now have, it appears the suspect murdered the victim at the time of the 911 call,” officials said in a statement.
Because of the exigent circumstances, detectives tried to track the suspect’s phone, but it had been off for several hours, they said.
Meanwhile, police said Flock cameras in Toledo, Ohio, confirmed the victim’s vehicle had entered the city. They said that the license plate reading system tracked the vehicle as it traveled north just before 10 a.m. Investigators said they presumed the driver was returning to Michigan.
As Wyandotte authorities prepared to intercept the suspect at the state border, a Toledo police officer spotted the suspect pulling into a parking lot, they said.
The officer attempted to take the suspect into custody, but the driver produced a handgun and shot himself, according to authorities. First responders arrived and pronounced the suspect deceased.
Officials said Wyandotte police detectives examined the scene and gathered evidence. They also confirmed the weapon in the suspect’s possession was the same caliber as the shell casings found at the scene of his mother’s murder.
