Police: Driver intentionally struck NY construction flagger with car, fled scene
A 20-year-old Schuyler County man has been arrested after New York State Police say he intentionally struck a construction zone flagger with his vehicle and fled the scene in Chemung County.
The flagger suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the incident.
Flagger struck while directing traffic
According to state police, the incident happened July 14 on Ridge Road in the town of Horseheads.
Investigators said the driver, identified as a 20-year-old Montour resident, was driving a 1999 Ford Mustang when he approached an active construction zone.
Police allege the driver revved the vehicle’s engine and antagonized a flagger who was holding a stop sign and directing traffic before intentionally striking her with the vehicle and leaving the scene.
The flagger was taken to a local hospital, where she was treated for bruising and other non-life-threatening injuries before being released.
Driver arrested days later
State police said investigators located the suspect July 19 at his home in the town of Montour and took him into custody.
He is charged with:
Second-degree assault, a Class D felony
Second-degree reckless endangerment
Third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation
Leaving the scene of a personal injury crash
Multiple vehicle and traffic violations
The suspect was arraigned in Horseheads Town Court and released after posting $1,080 bail.
The investigation remains ongoing.
